My Brother, not the Smartest Person in the World

High School — alisa on January 18, 2005 at 4:11 pm

If you are going to lock your older sister out of the house, you would lock the all of the doors, right? Yes. Good answer. What about the windows? No.

I was reading outside, and as soon as mom left, Eric informed me that all of the doors were locked.

“That’s nice,” I thought. I finished the chapter and decided that I better do something other than read all afternoon. I tried all the doors except the one on the balcony, sure enough, they were all locked.

“Hmm…I wonder if Henry’s window is unlocked.” I walked over and it was locked. “Darn.” As I left the area of Henry’s window, I decided to start checking other windows. I stood on my tip-toes and looked.

“What luck!” The second window I checked was unlocked, and it was on the first floor, too. I didn’t even have to get a ladder out. Screen off, window up, Alisa in. There was a great expression on Eric’s face when he saw me inside. You should have been there.

Awana Grand Pix

High School — alisa on January 17, 2005 at 1:04 pm

Every year there is an Awana Grand Prix car race. You have to design the little wooden pine cars and race them. It is hosted at a very conservative Baptist church. My car this year will be a rock concert. Maybe it’s not the best thing, but I think that it will be funny. At least I’m not going to have the blue-smoke effect that hangs over most concerts though. It’s ok to shock the old people once in a while. My mom is doing a Green Peace jeep that has a smashed zebra on the front. *shrugs*

Casa Grande Public Library, part ii

High School — alisa on January 16, 2005 at 7:49 pm

[part i: click here]

Here is another edition of complaints:

How can you have The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy(first book) and Mostly Harmless(Fifth book), but not the middle three??!!

and…

How can you have the majority of the books from Discworld, by Terry Pratchett, but not the first one?!

Also. A librarian is payed to know about books, right? Wrong. Do you want some dialogue?

Me: Can you check to see if The Restaurant at the end of the Universe is checked out? It’s part of THe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series.

Librarian: Hmm…how long has this book been released?

M: 20 years. [Here's when I am starting to get angry. Years before I read this book, I heard of it. This librarian, who works with books all day, hasn't?]

L: Well, it doesn’t seem that we have that book. The other book we have by him is Mostly Harmless.

M: Yeah. That’s the fifth book. I need the middle three.

[A period of intercession between customers while I am filling out an inter-library loan form]

M: Will you do a search for me on The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett? [Warning: if you want to have a possibility of finding any book worth finding at this library, make the librarians search for it.] It’s part of the Discworld series.

L: Who is it by? [Apparently Discworld had no effect on her]

M: Ter-ry Pra-tchett.

L: Well, here is a list of books that we have by him.

M: What about The Color of Magic? It’s the first in the series of 25 books.

L: No, we don’t have that book.

M: How can a library have the rest of the series, but not the first book?

L: Well….

M: Can I have an inter-library loan form?

L: I suppose, but….[reluctently hands over form]

So ends the dialogue. There was one, only one, good thing that I will say about this library: When the Da Vinci Code first came out, there was obviously a huge waiting list. I wanted to read it, and the nice librarian (I have deemed all of them mean or nice. There is one who is always nice, one who is nice if she isn’t working behind the desk, and the rest are always mean. The one I am speaking of now is the always nice one.) gave me a copy that happened to be in. That was pretty darn nice of her. To put me on top of a list of 25 people. That could have taken 7-9 months before I ever saw the first page of it! And that is the end of part ii.

Relient K Follow-Up

High School — alisa on January 16, 2005 at 1:29 pm

Relient K is also doing a show in Tuscon on Friday, February 18. The tickets are a bit cheaper, it’s a weekend, and it works better for me. I will probably start calling people tomorrow, because it is a holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), so be expecting a call, or just go find the tickets yourself on http://www.ticketmaster.com/ . The have a $5 handeling fee, so I am going to see if I can order the tickets straight from the club that is hosting the show.

Rock On!

Not So Well-Known Bands

High School — alisa on January 15, 2005 at 2:27 pm

I love finding out about bands before the majority of the people do. It gives me a chance to say, “Yeah, they’re a great band. I have a CD, want a copy?” It is a sensational feeling. Also, I hate bands that everyone seems to love. Like Lincoln Park. Or Blink182. Or Sum 41. There music is ok, but I don’t buy their cd’s because they are making enough money.

A great site to find not so well-known bands is:

http://www.purevolume.com

I found it kind of by mistake. They don’t have popular bands, because popular bands don’t need to use that site. They are already popular. It is kind of a promo site, but most of the bands have songs you can downlaod for free. For you worriers, it is all legal, because the bands put their own stuff on there in hopes that you will like them.
