Lifeguard Olympics

Arizona, High School — Alisa on July 31, 2005 at 9:30 pm

Tomorrow is the Lifeguard Olympics. It’s like the Olympics, only the teams aren’t from foreign countries with funny accents and we don’t do any of the events that are in the Olympics. We do things with 10 pound bricks and rescue tubes.

Look, I’m not crazy. San Diego is having some too. But their’s is expensive and highly organized and it’s their first time. Pansies. We don’t need organization; we’re competing in the ghetto. And, it’s not our first time. We have plastic trophies to prove that one.

So wish me luck, and more on this later (maybe).

Our Family Ties

High School — Alisa on July 26, 2005 at 11:55 pm

Isn’t it interesting how the London bombings got so much attention and the Egyptian bombing barely got media coverage? We are still very much attached to our comrades (ok, maybe that’s the wrong term to use considering…nevermind, and go read your history books).

Even though the bombs in Egypt killed 31 more people than the bombs in London, we were still very much more concerned with those who speak our language.

“It’s the Middle East. Aren’t they always blowing each other up?”

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

High School — Alisa on July 17, 2005 at 2:47 pm

3.5 out of 5 stars
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore

It’s much like the original screenplay adaption, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. So much so, that Gene Wilder (original Willy Wonka) started complaining. Johnny Depp’s reply?

“Somebody sent me an article where Gene Wilder said, ‘Why would they remake Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?’ We didn’t remake Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, we remade (the book) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s based on the same book they based theirs on. Making a statement that they only made this film because of the money is a really odd statement to make from a guy who has been in the business as long as he has . . . all movies were made because somebody somewhere wanted a return on their dollar that they spent. Ultimately it’s a business.”

It is more clear as to why all the grandparents are in the same bed, and the occasional flashback to Willy Wonka’s past is a good addition. Besides getting rid of the bad characters and promoting family values, it’s an all-around good, if not weird, movie. So what is it exactly that makes it so weird?

Michael and Johnny are one and the same? Ok, so I found a better similarity, but the picture of Michael Jackson was too small. I wish I had bookmarked that page where Yahoo! compared the two.

The Bottom Line: Watch the movie because everyone will be asking you if you did or not. To make the time pass faster, try to compare Jackson and Depp the whole time. I can think of quite a few similarities.

Michael Phelps and His Memory

High School — Alisa on July 16, 2005 at 10:11 am

It’s easy to write one’s memoirs when one has a terrible memory
-Arthur Schnitzler

That’s what Michael Phelps must have been doing when he wrote his life story. How old is he? Like 20? Anyways, it’s pretty lame to write a book when you only lived 1/4 of your life. And what could it possibly be about? Uhh, he swam when he was like 5 and hasn’t stopped since.

Nice.

It is kind of cliche, all those words.

His slogan? “This page is about me and why everything I like is great. If you disagree with anything you find on this page, you are wrong.”

But “The best page in the Universe” is kind of a blog. Kind of.

Oh, the Irony

Meg Pickard says it right: “Yesterday’s news seems very, very old by now.”
