College Food

This is my peanut butter jar after one week of college eating:

Peanut Butter after 1 week

This is a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich because a non-grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich got boring really fast:

Fried PB&J

And then after getting sick of eating grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I made this:

Pita!

Alisa’s very own classy college pita!  The lime makes it very classy, I think.  Also, it’s made with college kid staples:

  • tuna salad
  • carrots
  • lettuce
  • rice
  • cream cheese
  • pepper
  • oil and vinegar dressing
  • lime juice

Okay, so limes aren’t a staple for most people, but I like limes and I put them in everything (note:  limes do not taste good in ramen noodle soup).

What was a staple meal when you first started living on your own?

  1. Last year in the dorms I had a tiny fridge and a microwave. So I made soup. My favorite recipe was: 1. open can, 2. empty contents of said can into $.34 glass bowl from Wal-Mart, 3. microwave.
Some safety notes: don’t microwave in can. Don’t try to find out how long the timer will go on your microwave. Don’t turn the light out and hide with the door locked so you can finish your nap when the fire alarm goes off. And absolutely never tape up someone on your floor and carry him to the University Center.

  2. The dorm cafeteria food was usually surprisingly good — it went against everything we’d been taught about cafeteria food through movies and television. Grilled cheese sandwiches (courtesy of a little sandwich maker we acquired) was usually the in-room staple. Once I moved off-campus I was extremely grateful to have a kitchen again.

I’m going to have to disagree with Aaron on a few points. Firstly, always hide in your room during a fire alarm. Chances are some drunken idiot pulled it to be funny, so why should you have to stand outside in your pajamas for his sake? Then again, our room was on the first floor, so if things went bad we could always just jump out of the window. Also, if you have the opportunity to tape someone up… DO IT.

Then blow the picture up and hang it on the wall.

    That will be all :-)

  3. Everyday I had two peanut butter sandwiches and two bottles of Tab at my work place. I simply left the bottles on my desk until they kind of piled up. It really irritated my boss. I survived because my room mate had a Home Ec degree in Foods.

  4. UofA doesn’t have a normal cafeteria. It’s pretty freakin lame. There are all these little fast food places scattered across campus, and if you pay for a meal plan, then you get the sales tax taken off. It’s sooo expensive to eat on campus! There isn’t even like a “we know you have to eat here every day, dorm students, so we’ll sell you extra cheap food” type deal either. It’s all normal priced.

I am guessing that I’m spending about 1/4 the money that I would for food if I lived in a dorm.

Good advice about the fire alarm… I think. The people next to me smoke pot every night so who knows what they might do.

For the record, I have helped tape someone up. Summer of ‘06 I taped up a freakin’ annoying lifeguard. Problems solved.

Shealy: lucky for you with that roommate. I had to teach mine how to cook spaghetti (like with the boxed pasta and canned sauce)! Sad but true.
