Denver Trip

Life, Photography, Travel — alisa on January 9, 2008 at 2:39 pm

For the past week I was in Denver, Colorado, at Life Impact 2008. I decided right off the bat that I loved the city and that I wouldn’t protest if someone forced me to live in an apartment that hung over the top of a downtown boutique.

Here is a totally unedited view from the ninth floor of the Grand Hyatt at 7am:

My roommates and I slept with the curtains open, even though I know that stalkers could spy on us with a rifle scope or binoculars. In Tucson there are about 4 tall buildings, and Tucson has light pollution regulations because of the UofA observatory. So, we took the view any chance we could get, stalkers and all.

The higher altitude in Denver took me the whole week to get used to. One day, I decided to take the stairs up to my room instead of taking the elevators. The elevators gave me a headache because of the almost instant change in elevation. Nine flights of stairs? No problem, right? Wrong. I’m not sure which is worse: wheezing for half an hour or having a headache.

I spent a day in Boulder, too. It was a cute little college town, but I wouldn’t like to live there. I think I like cities with at least a million people. If I lived in Boulder, I would wake up every day and say, “What am I going to do today? Oh right, figure out how to breathe without oxygen. Right.”

Even the fish have Louis Vuitton bags there

Last week I was in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point as the American’s call it, is a popular destination for Arizonians. It’s about 3 hours south of Tucson, and sits on the northern shores of the Sea of Cortez.

On the way down, my family (including my sister, Sara, who flew in from Minnesota) stopped at a gas station north of the border. We found wine in suspiciously portable bottles:
500 ml of wine goodness
There was also a beer soda bottle opener by the door.

Sara and I went right out the front door of the condo to snorkel and found all sorts of things. We saw a sea slug about the size of my hand:

A large school of fish:
Like Sardines

And a flounder:

I thought that waking up at sunrise and taking photos would be a good idea. It was actually pretty lame. And to be quite honest, it sucked. I was huddled under blankets, taking pictures with a tripod, and looking like those photographers from the 1900’s. The pictures came out about as good as something from the 1900’s too. This photo is the only one that I liked, but I slathered on saturation heavier than my mom slathers sunscreen on my ears.

Down in Mexico, you are treated so nice. Everything is a “huppy hour especial, just for you my friend.” You feel special until you realize that everyone gets a huppy hour especial too. It was fun while it lasted.

Lake Tahoe

Over the weekend I went to Lake Tahoe to ski. It snowed a lot. It never stopped snowing the whole time I was there.

Yeah, that's I-80
This is I-80.

If I lived in Lake Tahoe I think I would be a ski bum and work at this ski shop.
